Can People See When You View Their Instagram Story?

Quick answer
Yes. When you watch an Instagram story while logged in, your name appears in the owner’s viewer list. Instagram does not tell people about your profile visits, post views or story screenshots. If you view a public account through a web tool without logging in, your account is not used and your name is not added to the list.
Short answer: do they see me?
As soon as you open someone’s story while logged in to Instagram, your username is added to their viewer list. Skipping through quickly or leaving halfway does not change that; the story counts as opened.
| What you do | Can the owner see it? |
|---|---|
| Watch their story with your account | Yes, you appear in the viewer list |
| Visit their profile | No, Instagram does not show profile visitors |
| Look at a post or reel | No, only likes and comments are visible |
| Screenshot a regular story | No notification* |
| Watch through a web tool without logging in | No, your account is not used |
* Instagram can change its notification rules. Disappearing photos and videos sent by direct message work differently.
What exactly does the story owner see?
The person who posted opens their own story and taps to see the viewer list: the usernames and profile pictures of accounts that watched.
- Order: The list is not always in viewing order, and Instagram does not explain how it is sorted. Reading too much into who is at the top is unreliable.
- Time limit: A story stays live for 24 hours. After it expires the viewer list can still be seen for a limited time in the archive. That period has changed over time, so check the current one in the Instagram app.
- Who cannot watch at all: If someone hides a story from you or shares it only with their Close Friends list, you cannot open it in the first place.
What is not shown? Common questions
- Profile visits: Instagram does not tell anyone that you opened their profile. Apps that claim to show “who viewed my profile” do not work.
- Post and reel views: Unless you like or comment, nobody sees that you looked at a post or reel.
- Screenshots: Taking a screenshot of a regular story does not send a notification. Disappearing messages work differently.
“Invisible viewing” tricks that do not hold up
A few tricks circulate online. None is reliable:
- Airplane mode: Loading a story and then switching to airplane mode sometimes looks like it works, but the view is often recorded once the app reconnects, and Instagram updates keep changing the behavior.
- “Profile visitor” apps: Instagram does not provide this data, so these apps are either fake or collect your password. Never log in to one.
- A second account: It works, but that account’s name shows in the list, and private accounts require a follow approval.
How to watch without being added to the list
A web tool that never uses your account cannot add you to the viewer list. With Shadowly:
- Open the Instagram story viewer.
- Type the username.
- The stories open; you do not need to log in or share a password.
Your first search of the day and the first item in each section are free; opening all stories uses credits. For the full method see our guide to watching stories anonymously. To look at a profile without an account, read how to view an Instagram profile without an account.
Limits: when no tool can help
- Private accounts: Stories are shown only to approved followers, and no site can bypass that. See can you see a private account’s story.
- Close Friends stories: Only the people on the list can open them.
- Expired stories: They disappear after 24 hours.
Control who sees your own stories
If you want to limit who watches your stories, use Instagram’s own controls: the Close Friends list, hiding your story from specific people and making the account private. Our privacy settings guide walks through each step.
